Unlock Portugal is an independent resource built by a small team based in Northern Portugal. We moved here ourselves and know first-hand how overwhelming the process can be: visas, taxes, healthcare, finding a home, opening a bank account, and everything in between. We created this site to share the practical, real-world knowledge we wish we had when we started.

What makes our guides trustworthy

Every guide is researched and regularly updated by people who actually live in Portugal and navigate these systems themselves — not written once and left to go stale.

• Official sources first. Wherever a guide states a rule, a fee, or a deadline, we link to the government agency or institution that publishes it — AIMA, Finanças, Segurança Social, SNS, and others. See the Editorial Policy for the full list.
• Visible update dates. Every guide shows an “Updated” date in its byline — that’s when it was last checked against current rules, not just when it was first published.
• Corrections, not silence. If a rule changes or we get something wrong, we fix it and don’t leave a known error live because a page is popular. Use “Report an error” on any guide, or contact us directly.
